Flowers Foods, Inc. (FLO) is voluntarily recalling Mrs. Freshley’s and other brands Of Swiss Rolls and Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread due to the potential presence of Salmonella in an ingredient, whey powder. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled items, the company noted.

The recalled products sold under the brand names Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square, and Great Value  were distributed nationwide, and Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Eating food contaminated with Salmonella leads to salmonellosis, a type of food poisoning. The symptoms of salmonellosis develop 12 to 72 hours after infection, and include diarrhea, fever or abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. In rare cases, infection with Salmonella can produce more severe illnesses such as arterial infections , endocarditis and arthritis.
