Following on the heels of reports yesterday, the CDC has confirmed “a multistate outbreak of Salmonella serotype Bareilly infections.” The CDC released an email, which states that the investigation by CDC and other state and federal health officials has “not conclusively identified a food vehicle. The investigation is ongoing into individual food items and their sources.”
Preliminary reports indicate that the food vehicle may be sushi, sashimi, or similar foods
The outbreak appears to be ongoing, as the 90 reported illnesses to date range from January 28 to April 2, 2012. Illnesses have been reported in 19 states. The serotype of Salmonella invovled is rare.
At this time, the CDC is NOT providing any specific advice to consumers.
