The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is warning consumers that Starfish Seafood Cold Smoked Seafood Trio – Salmon, Halibut, Trout, distributed by Krasnyi Oktyabr USA Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, is being recalled because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recalled product was sold in 8-ounce packages bearing Lot Number D139149161-153 and a best before date of 01.21.2027. It was distributed nationwide.
The problem was found when state food inspectors sampled the product and the Department’s Food Laboratory detected Listeria monocytogenes in some of the 8-ounce packages. No illnesses have been reported to the Department to date.
Consumers who have this product should throw it away. Questions can be directed to Krasnyi Oktyabr USA Inc. at 718-858-6720.
This is not the first time New York inspectors have flagged a Krasnyi Oktyabr product. The company has previously recalled uneviscerated dried fish over botulism concerns.
Cold-smoked fish is a classic Listeria risk. It is never cooked to a temperature that kills the bacteria, it is eaten straight from the package, and Listeria can keep growing in the refrigerator. That makes ready-to-eat smoked seafood a particular concern for pregnant women, older adults, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

What is Listeria?
Listeriosis is an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms can appear anywhere from a few days to as long as 70 days after eating contaminated food, which is why people who ate a recalled product should stay alert for weeks. In healthy people it may look like a short flu-like illness with fever, muscle aches, headache, nausea, and diarrhea. In older adults and the immunocompromised it can spread to the bloodstream and brain, causing sepsis and meningitis. In pregnant women it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection in the newborn. Anyone who ate the recalled product and develops symptoms should contact a doctor and mention the possible Listeria exposure.
