The Illinois Department of Public Health has just updated its case count in the Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated alfalfa sprouts served at Jimmy Johns restaurants in at least 10 counties statewide.  50 people are now counted as "confirmed" cases in the outbreak, with tests showing a genetic match to the Salmonella strain I 4,5,12, i-, which has been reported as the outbreak strain of Salmonella.

I confess to being utterly stumped as to whether Jimmy John’s statement yesterday is accurate that there are 88 people sick in 15 states with the same strain of Salmonella.  If that is the case, it seems that there should have been some public health announcement about the outbreak, from the CDC or other states involved in the investigation.  Stay tuned.
