Law aims to keep unsafe food off the table
Sun Shangwu of the China Daily News reports that the alarming number of cases of contaminated farm produce in markets have prodded Chinese legislators to draft a law improving the quality and safety of agricultural products.
The law is drafted to protect the health of the public and increase the competitiveness of Chinese agricultural products in international markets, said Minister of Agriculture Du Qinglin.

Food poisoning in Borivli
A celebration turned into tragedy at a slum in Borivli late on Monday when several hutment dwellers consumed meals after a religious function and fell ill. Nine of the victims were later rushed to Borivli’s Bhagwati Hospital with symptoms of food poisoning.
The slum dwellers living along IC Colony in Ganpathpatil Nagar had come together to celebrate a ‘Satyanarayan Puja’, which was followed by a ‘prasad’ of puri-bhaji and sweet boondi for nearly 300 residents.
But around midnight children began complaining of nausea, which was followed by bouts of vomiting and loose motions. “When we headed home after the function was over, Deepak started vomiting continuously,” said Mundrika Jha, the mother of the five-year-old. Mrudu Naik and Adarsh Madhavan report that food poisoning cases are on a high. A three-month (April to June, 2005) Ministry of Health statistics reveal that a total of 127 cases were reported, a top Ministry of Health official told the Times of Oman in a recent interview.
Indeed, a cursory look at last year’s statistics will reveal that more than 500 cases were reported. Last year (excluding January, February and March 2004), a total of 545 cases were reported. The second quarter of last year saw 178 food poisoning cases, which was 51 more than the ones reported for this year in the same period.

Food poisioning toll hits 57
Health department officials have confirmed another five cases of salmonella poisoning in Tasmania, boosting the total number of people affected to 57. The food poisoning outbreak is centred on two bakeries – the Trevallyn Gourmet and the Sugar Shack – located in the northern city of Launceston. The bakeries have been shut down since Thursday, and a microbiologist has been hired to assist in the investigation.

Leanne Raymond reports that a food poisoning scare has hit three residences of the University of Cape Town with more than 40 students who share a dining hall falling ill with vomiting and diarrhoea.
A concerned parent, who preferred not to be named, told the Cape Times students became ill on Tuesday night and then again on Wednesday night. One student was taken to hospital.
Ludwe Mbhele, head of the house committee at the University House Residence, said: “Students started getting sick (on Tuesday) from the University House Dining Hall.
