Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable, communicable disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It is usually transmitted person-to-person through the fecal-oral route or consumption of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A is a self-limited disease that does not result in chronic infection. Most adults with hepatitis A have symptoms, including fatigue, low appetite, stomach pain, nausea, and jaundice, that usually resolve within 2 months of infection; most children less than 6 years of age do not have symptoms or have an unrecognized infection.
Since the hepatitis A vaccine was first recommended in 1996, rates of hepatitis A have declined dramatically in the United States.
One dose of single-antigen hepatitis A vaccine has been shown to control outbreaks of hepatitis A and provides up to 95% seroprotection in healthy individuals for up to 11 years.
In 2015, there were only 1,390 reported cases of hepatitis A in the nation.
However, since the current outbreaks were first identified in late 2016, there have been more than 25,000 cases reported, mostly among groups most at-risk. Severe complications, high rates of hospitalization, and at least 250 deaths have occurred nationwide as a result of these outbreaks.
