Colorado residents are lucky in lots of ways, not least of which is that they are protected every day by supremely talented state and local health department officials. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have some federal dollars because its a FoodNet site. Nonetheless, Colorado is often on the leading edge of outbreak detection and illness surveillance, which may be why Colorado residents are often “involved” in national foodpoisoning outbreaks.
In the Listeria cantaloupe outbreak–of course, this time, it was where the contaminated cantaloupes were grown–we represent a number of families dealing with the loss of a family member or a very severe illness. Some remain hospitalized, or in long term care, since August. This is certainly not our first rodeo in the state, or any other state for that matter.
