Kraft Foods Inc., in what officials called "a precautionary measure," this morning issued a recall for meat products made at a certain production facility because of concerns about possible contamination with Listeria

The Northfield-based food-product concern said that Carolina Culinary Foods, an "external manufacturer" for Kraft which is based in South Carolina, issued a recall Feb. 18 because "of a finding of Listeria monocytogenes in a single package" of Oscar Mayer/Louis Rich Chicken Breast Strips – Grilled with a "best when used by date" of 19APR2007.

Kraft said that while it has "had no reports of listeriosis associated with the Feb. 18 recall and have had no other findings of Listeria in our product," the company’s subsequent evaluation "has led us to conclude that as a precautionary measure we should expand the scope of our initial action to include all our products made at that facility."

Kraft emphasized that the products being removed from retailers’ shelves are only Oscar Mayer/Louis Rich Chicken Breast Strips and Cuts, and that no other Oscar Mayer or Louis rich products are involved in the recall.

Listeriosis is a disease particularly dangerous to children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems; the form of food poisoning is caused by the bacterium known as Listeria monocytogenes.
