The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume and retailers, restaurants and institutions not to sell or use the nut butters, peanuts, sugar or tahini manufactured by Vicrossano Inc. because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella or other harmful bacteria.

St. Thomas Fish Market in New Brunswick is voluntarily recalling its product, St. Thomas bar clams, because they may contain Clostridium botulinum.

Toxins produced by the bacteria can cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.

There have been no illnesses reported, said the agency.

Food contaminated with these bacteria might not look or smell spoiled.

Symptoms include

  • Pro-Amino International Inc., of Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada, is recalling the ProtiDiet High Protein Chocolate Dream Bars described below.
  • The recalled product may contain Salmonella.
  • Salmonella is a public health risk and is one of the most common causes of foodborne illness. Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

A total of 22 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium were reported from 6 states.

The number of ill persons identified in each state was as follows: Arizona (1), Illinois (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (9), Pennsylvania (1), and Wisconsin (8).

50% of ill persons were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has revoked the food-processing license of Chu Minh Corp., which produces tofu and other soy products, after several inspections found on-going sanitation problems with the Seattle business.

In addition to revoking the company’s license to process food, WSDA also assessed a civil penalty of $17,800 against the company

Steve’s Real Food of Murray, Utah is recalling its 5 lb. bags of “Turducken Canine Diet – 8oz. Patties due to potential contamination of Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact
