alfalfa-sprouts.jpgGreen Valley Food Corp. is recalling 650 cases of alfalfa sprouts that may be contaminated with Salmonella.

In a news release, the company said a random sample of the sprouts collected on Dec, 12 from a customer tested positive for Salmonella. There so far have been no illnesses confirmed in connection with the sprouts, according

The implicated packages have a “best if used by” code of DEC16 and codes DP 340 and T691.

Thumbnail image for hannaford-logo.jpgAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 16 people have been infected by Salmonella Typhimurium in an outbreak linked to ground beef sold at Hannaford grocery stores in seven states. As a result, the Scarborough, Maine-based grocery chain has recalled an unknown amount of fresh ground beef products. (1)

spain v germany.jpgThis past summer, Germany was the epicenter of an unthinkably large outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O104:H4 (STEC O104:H4) infections.  According to the CDC’s update in July, the outbreak included 852 patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome(HUS)–a type of kidney failure that is associated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.  There were 32 deaths. 

Yesterday, Canada’s food safety regulatory agency, CFIA, warned consumers not to eat certain jalapeno peppers sold primarily in bulk and unlabeled, out of fears of Salmonella contamination.  The peppers were from Cal Fresco, a California company, which had also distributed the peppers to retail establishments in California, Oregon, Washington, and Texas.  Cal Fresco recalled the
