16 E. coli O157:H7 illnesses investigated by FDA, NY and CDC

FDA is collaborating with the New York State Department of Health, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate an outbreak of 16 E. coli O157:H7 infections reported in New York State.

Wegmans has recalled Wegmans brand Organic Spinach & Spring Mix sold in 5 oz and 11 oz packages from its stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts sold between October 14 and November 1. Wegmans is recalling the product, a blend of organic spinach and spring mix, based on an association between the product and reported illnesses in New York State due to E. coli O157:H7 identified by New York State officials. The product is supplied to Wegmans by State Garden, Inc. located in Chelsea, Massachusetts.

Wegmans notified its supplier of the findings by New York State officials and the supplier has issued a press release related to the product. FDA is working with state officials, Wegmans, and its supplier to determine further distribution of this product and ensure it is removed from the marketplace.

FDA is moving quickly to learn as much as possible and prevent additional people from becoming ill. The investigation is ongoing. FDA will continue to provide updates and advice to the public as more information becomes available.
