Sunsprout Natural Foods has expanded its voluntary recall on certain lots of Sunsprout and SproutsAlive brand alfalfa sprouts because of possible Salmonella contamination.

On June 12, the Brantford, Ontario, Canada, firm said the product was distributed only within the Ontario province.

The updated recall, issued June 14, now involves product that may have been distributed nationally to retailers within Canada, including Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Ontario.

The affected lots are 140-gram clamshells of Sunsprout alfalfa sprouts with the product code of 0 57621 13501 7 and best used before date of June 13, and 140-gram clamshells of SproutsAlive alfalfa sprouts with a UPC code of 0 69022 00030 6 and a best used before date of June 13, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website.

No illnesses have been reported.

The voluntary recall is being monitored by the agency.

Sunsprout issued the initial recall June 12, saying the product was distributed within Ontario.
